Elisha Cook Jr. was born in San Francisco on December 26, 1903, and died on May 18, 1995. He worked as a character actor in film, television, and stage productions across a career spanning more than 60 years. He initially played cheerful, intelligent college-age characters before being cast against type as Wilmer Cook, a bug-eyed baby-faced killer, in the 1941 film version of The Maltese Falcon, after which he took on roles as deceptively mild-mannered villains in productions including The Big Sleep, Shane, The Killing, House on Haunted Hill, and Rosemary's Baby.
