Biography

Elizabeth Catlett was born in Washington, D.C., in 1915 and worked as a sculptor, printmaker, painter, illustrator, and art educator. She created works depicting the Black-American experience in the twentieth century, with particular attention to the female experience. In 1946, a fellowship enabled her to move to Mexico City, where she joined the Taller de Gráfica Popular and later served as head of the sculpture department at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas. During the 1950s, sculpture became her primary artistic medium, though she continued printmaking until her death in 2012.
