Elizabeth Monroe was born in New York City on June 30, 1768, and died on September 23, 1830. She served as First Lady of the United States from 1817 to 1825 as the wife of James Monroe, the fifth president. Because of James Monroe's fragile health, many of her duties as official White House hostess were carried out by her eldest daughter, Eliza Monroe Hay.
