Ellen Lewis Herndon Arthur was born in Culpeper, Virginia, in 1837. She was the wife of Chester A. Arthur, who became the 21st president of the United States. Arthur died in January 1880 from pneumonia; her husband was elected vice-president that November and became president in September 1881 following President James A. Garfield's assassination.
