Esther Lederberg was born in the Bronx in 1922 and worked as a microbiologist and geneticist until her death in 2006. She discovered the bacterial virus lambda phage and the bacterial fertility factor F. She devised the first implementation of replica plating and contributed to understanding how genes transfer between bacteria through specialized transduction.
