Biography

Esther Rolle was born in Pompano Beach, Florida, in 1920 and worked as an actor across film, television, stage, and dance. She played Florida Evans on the CBS sitcom Maude from 1972 to 1974 and continued the role in the spin-off series Good Times, which brought her a Golden Globe nomination in 1976. In 1979, she won an Outstanding Supporting Actress award for the television film Summer of My German Soldier. She died in 1998.
