Ethel Waters was born in Chester, Pennsylvania in 1896 and died in 1977. She was a singer and actress who performed jazz, swing, and pop music on Broadway and in concerts, beginning her career in the 1920s with blues singing. Her recordings included "Dinah," "Stormy Weather," "Taking a Chance on Love," "Heat Wave," and "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," among others. Waters was the second African American nominated for an Academy Award, the first African American to star on her own television show, and the first African-American woman nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.
