Fred Hampton was born on August 30, 1948, in Summit, Illinois. He served as deputy chairman of the Black Panther Party and as chair of its Illinois chapter until his death on December 4, 1969. Hampton founded the Rainbow Coalition, a multicultural political organization that united Black Panthers, Young Patriots, and Young Lords, and he formed an alliance among Chicago street gangs to reduce internal conflict and advance social change. He began his activism with the NAACP, where he held the position of Youth Council President of the West Suburban branch in the Chicago area.
