Frederick Albert Cook was born in Hortonville, New York in 1865 and worked as an explorer, medical doctor, and surgeon. He claimed to have reached the North Pole on April 21, 1908, though a University of Copenhagen commission ruled this claim unproven in December 1909 after reviewing his records. He also claimed to have been the first person to reach the summit of Denali, a claim that has since been discredited. His expedition was the first and only one in which a United States national discovered an Arctic island in North America, Meighen Island. Cook died in 1940.
