Gene Deitch was born in Chicago in 1924 and worked as an illustrator, animator, comics artist, and film director. From the 1960s onward, he was based in Prague until his death in 2020. He created the animated cartoons Munro, Tom Terrific, and Nudnik, and contributed to the Popeye and Tom and Jerry series.
