Biography

George Ellery Hale was born in Chicago in 1868 and worked as a journalist, physicist, astrophysicist, and astronomer. He discovered magnetic fields in sunspots and was instrumental in planning and constructing major telescopes, including the 40-inch refracting telescope at Yerkes Observatory, the 60-inch and 100-inch reflecting telescopes at Mount Wilson Observatory, and the 200-inch reflecting telescope at Palomar Observatory. He contributed to the founding of the International Union for Cooperation in Solar Research and the National Research Council, and helped develop the California Institute of Technology into a research university. He died in 1938.
