Biography
George Henry Thomas was born on July 31, 1816, in Southampton County, Virginia. A military officer, he served in the Mexican–American War and later commanded in the Western Theater during the American Civil War as a general in the Union Army. Although a Virginian, he remained in the U.S. Army rather than joining the Confederacy. He died on March 28, 1870.
