Biography

George Catlett Marshall Jr. was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania on December 31, 1880, and died on October 16, 1959. He served as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army under Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, then held the positions of Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense under Truman. As Secretary of State, he championed American economic and political involvement in post-war European recovery through the Marshall Plan. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953, the only Army general to do so.
