George Ord was born in Philadelphia in 1781 and died in 1866. He worked as an ornithologist, zoologist, and writer, specializing in North American ornithology and mammalogy. His 1815 article "Zoology of North America," published in the second American edition of William Guthrie's Geographical, Historical, and Commercial Grammar, drew in part on specimens collected by Lewis and Clark from the North American interior and has been recognized as the "first systematic zoology of America by an American."
