Gouverneur Morris was born in Morrisania, New York, in 1752 and died in 1816. A politician and Founding Father, he signed both the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution, and wrote the Preamble to the Constitution. He represented New York in the United States Senate from 1800 to 1803 and advocated for citizenship in a single union of states rather than separate state loyalties. At the Constitutional Congress, he opposed slavery among those present.
