Anna Mary Robertson Moses, known as Grandma Moses, was born in Greenwich, New York, in 1860 and died in 1961. She worked as an embroiderer, painter, illustrator, and artist, beginning to paint seriously at age 78. During the 1950s she gained popularity, appearing on a Time Magazine cover in 1953 and being the subject of television programs and a 1950 Oscar-nominated biographical documentary. Her autobiography, My Life's History, was published in 1952, and she received two honorary doctoral degrees.
