Biography

Hilda Doolittle was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 1886 and worked as a poet, novelist, and writer under the name H.D. After moving to London in 1911, she co-founded the Imagist group with Ezra Pound, publishing minimalist free verse poems that drew international attention. Over her career she worked across fiction, memoir, and verse drama, and during World War II her poetry shifted toward longer, complex works addressing esoteric and pacifist subjects. She died in 1961.
