Biography

Harold Gregory Moore Jr. was born in Bardstown, Kentucky, in 1922 and died in 2017. A United States Army officer who attained the rank of lieutenant general, Moore commanded the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment as a lieutenant colonel during the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965. He co-authored the 1992 book We Were Soldiers Once…and Young, which recounted that battle and was adapted into a 2002 film. Moore received the Distinguished Service Cross and was the first member of his 1945 West Point class to reach the ranks of brigadier general, major general, and lieutenant general.
