Harold Garfinkel was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1917 and died in 2011. A sociologist and pedagogue, he taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, and developed ethnomethodology as a field of inquiry in sociology. His 1967 work Studies in Ethnomethodology collected articles on the subject, and additional material from unpublished sources appeared later in Seeing Sociologically and Ethnomethodology's Program. While enrolled in a Theory of Accounts course at the University of Newark, which later became Rutgers University, he studied accounting and bookkeeping procedures and theorized the categorical structures underlying such practices.
