Biography

Harry Partch was born in Oakland, California in 1901 and died in 1974. He worked as a composer, music theorist, and maker of musical instruments. Partch composed using scales of unequal intervals in just intonation and was one of the first twentieth-century composers in the West to work systematically with microtonal scales, alongside Lou Harrison. He built his own instruments tuned to these scales and described his theory and practice in his book Genesis of a Music, published in 1947.
