Biography

Helen Frankenthaler was born in Manhattan in 1928 and worked as a painter, printmaker, lithographer, draftsperson, and sculptor. She began exhibiting large-scale abstract expressionist paintings in the early 1950s and was included in the 1964 Post-Painterly Abstraction exhibition curated by Clement Greenberg. Her work was exhibited worldwide from the 1950s onward, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City held a retrospective of her paintings in 1989. She received the National Medal of Arts in 2001 and died in 2011.
