Biography

Helen Kane was born in The Bronx, New York, in 1904 and worked as a singer, actress, and musician. Her signature song, "I Wanna Be Loved by You," premiered in the 1928 stage musical Good Boy, composed by Kalmar and Ruby. Her voice and appearance were considered a source for Fleischer Studios animators in creating the character Betty Boop; Kane sued the studio over the use of her "boop-oop-a-doop" style, but the court found insufficient evidence and dismissed the case. She died in 1966.
