Henry Augustus Rowland was born in Honesdale, Pennsylvania on 27 November 1848 and died on 16 April 1901. A physicist and educator at Johns Hopkins, he served as the first president of the American Physical Society from 1899 to 1901. He produced diffraction gratings of high quality and used them to study the solar spectrum.
