Henry Wager Halleck was born on January 16, 1815, in Oneida County, New York, and died on January 9, 1872. He served as a military commander, major general, and lawyer. Halleck held the position of General-in-Chief of the Armies of the United States from 1862 to 1864, and later became Chief of Staff when Ulysses S. Grant was appointed to that position. He participated in the admission of California as a state and worked as a lawyer and land developer.
