Biography

Henry Lewis Stimson was born in New York City in 1867 and worked as a lawyer, diplomat, and politician. He served as Secretary of War under President William Howard Taft from 1911 to 1913, then as Secretary of State under President Herbert Hoover from 1929 to 1933, and returned to the position of Secretary of War under Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman from 1940 to 1945, during which period he oversaw American military efforts in World War II. He died in 1950.
