Herbert Jay Solomon, known by his stage name Herbie Mann, was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1930 and died in 2003. A jazz flute player, he also performed tenor saxophone and clarinet early in his career. Mann was among the first jazz musicians to concentrate on the flute, and he worked with world music. His single "Hi-Jack" reached number one on the Billboard dance chart for three weeks in 1975.
