Herman Hollerith was born on February 29, 1860, in Buffalo, New York, and worked as a statistician, inventor, mathematician, and businessman. He developed an electromechanical tabulating machine that used punched cards to process and summarize information, receiving a patent for this invention in 1884. His machine processed data using mechanized binary code in a semiautomatic system, a concept that remained dominant in the field for nearly a century. He died on November 17, 1929.
