Biography

Ira Gershwin was born in Manhattan in 1896 and worked as a lyricist and librettist alongside his younger brother, composer George Gershwin. Together they created more than a dozen Broadway shows and wrote songs including "I Got Rhythm", "Embraceable You", "The Man I Love", and "Someone to Watch Over Me". He collaborated with DuBose Heyward on the libretto for George's opera Porgy and Bess. He died in 1983.
