Biography

John Edgar Hoover was born in Washington, D.C. in 1895 and worked as a law enforcement administrator, lawyer, and police officer. President Calvin Coolidge appointed him director of the Bureau of Investigation in 1924, and he served as the fifth and final director of that agency before it became the Federal Bureau of Investigation in June 1935. Hoover remained director of the FBI for 37 years until his death in May 1972, leading both agencies for a combined 48 years under eight presidents.
