J. Michael Bishop was born in York, Pennsylvania in 1936 and worked as an oncologist, virologist, immunologist, microbiologist, chemist, and physician. He shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Harold E. Varmus. Bishop held a faculty position at the University of California, San Francisco, and served as chancellor there from 1998 to 2009. He died in 2026.
