J. P. Donleavy was an American-Irish author, short story writer, novelist, and playwright born in Brooklyn in 1926. He achieved critical acclaim with his 1955 novel The Ginger Man, initially published in Paris, which became an international bestseller and has sold 50 million copies worldwide. The novel was translated into over 30 languages and ranked 99th in the Modern Library's 2000 list of the "100 Best Novels of the 20th century". He died in 2017.
