Jack Kemp was born in Los Angeles on July 13, 1935, and died on May 2, 2009. He worked as a professional football player and served in the U.S. Army before entering politics. He represented his district in the U.S. House of Representatives for nine terms between 1971 and 1989, then served as U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President George H. W. Bush from 1989 to 1993. In 1996, he was the Republican Party's vice presidential nominee, with Bob Dole as the presidential nominee; they lost to Bill Clinton and Al Gore.
