Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia in 1919 and died in 1972. He played professional baseball and was the first African American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era, starting at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. His signing by the Dodgers marked the end of racial segregation in professional baseball, which had confined black players to the Negro leagues since the 1880s.
