Jacqueline Susann was born in Philadelphia in 1918 and worked as a novelist, actress, and writer until her death in 1974. Her 1966 novel Valley of the Dolls became one of the best-selling books in publishing history. She followed this with The Love Machine in 1969 and Once Is Not Enough in 1973, becoming the first author to have three consecutive novels top The New York Times Best Seller list.
