James G. Blaine was born on January 31, 1830, in West Brownsville, Pennsylvania, and worked as an editor, journalist, diplomat, politician, lawyer, and writer. He represented Maine in the House of Representatives from 1863 to 1876 and served as Speaker from 1869 to 1875, followed by a Senate seat from 1876 to 1881. Blaine held the office of Secretary of State twice: under James A. Garfield and Chester A. Arthur in 1881, and under Benjamin Harrison from 1889 to 1892. He sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1876 and 1880, secured it in 1884, and lost the general election to Grover Cleveland. Blaine died on January 27, 1893.
