Biography

James Henry Breasted was born in Rockford, Illinois in 1865 and worked as an archaeologist, Egyptologist, and historian. He earned his PhD from the University of Berlin in 1894, becoming the first American to receive a doctorate in Egyptology, and subsequently joined the University of Chicago faculty. He directed the Haskell Oriental Museum beginning in 1901 and was promoted to full professor in 1905, holding the first chair in Egyptology and Oriental History in the United States. He died in 1935.
