James M. Gavin was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1907 and served as a lieutenant general in the United States Army. He commanded the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II as its third Commanding General. He participated in combat jumps alongside the paratroopers under his command, making four such jumps during the war—a distinction he held alone among American general officers of that conflict. He later worked as a diplomat before his death in 1990.
