James Middleton Cox was born in Jacksonburg, Ohio, in 1870 and died in 1957. He worked as a journalist, opinion journalist, politician, and businessperson, serving as the 46th and 48th governor of Ohio and as a two-term U.S. representative from Ohio. He was the Democratic nominee for President in 1920, losing to Warren G. Harding. Franklin D. Roosevelt was his running mate in that election. Cox founded a newspaper chain that became Cox Enterprises, a media conglomerate.
