James R. Schlesinger was born in New York City on February 15, 1929, and died on March 27, 2014. An economist and politician, he served as Chair of the Atomic Energy Commission from 1971 to 1973, as CIA Director in 1973, and as Secretary of Defense from 1973 to 1975 under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He became Secretary of Energy in 1977 under President Jimmy Carter, serving until 1979.
