Biography

Jane Irwin Harrison served as acting first lady of the United States for one month beginning in March 1841, during her father-in-law William Henry Harrison's presidency. She assumed the role after the president's wife, Anna Harrison, could not reach the White House before his death. Harrison was the widow of William Henry Harrison Jr. The president died in office shortly after her month of service ended.
