Jason Miller was born in Queens, New York in 1939 and died in 2001. He worked as a playwright, actor, screenwriter, and film director. His play That Championship Season won the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for playing Father Damien Karras in the 1973 film The Exorcist, a role he reprised in The Exorcist III in 1990. Miller served as artistic director of the Scranton Public Theatre in Pennsylvania, where That Championship Season was set.
