He served as a justice on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania from 1851 to 1857 and as Chief Justice from 1851 to 1854. He held the position of Attorney General in President James Buchanan's Cabinet from 1857 to 1860, then served as Secretary of State from 1860 to 1861.
