Jerome John Garcia was born in San Francisco in 1942 and worked as a guitarist, vocalist, and composer. He co-founded the rock band Grateful Dead and served as its lead guitarist, a group that gained prominence during the 1960s counterculture. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him in 1994 as a member of the Grateful Dead. He died in 1995.
