Jerry Sloan played 11 seasons as a professional basketball player in the NBA before transitioning to coaching. He served as head coach of the Utah Jazz for 23 years between 1988 and 2011, part of a 30-year coaching career overall. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inducted him in 2009. Sloan was born in McLeansboro, Illinois in 1942 and died in 2020.
