Jim Croce was born in Philadelphia on January 10, 1943, and worked as a guitarist, songwriter, and singer-songwriter. Between 1966 and 1973, he released five studio albums and numerous singles, holding various jobs to support himself while writing and performing. After partnering with guitarist Maury Muehleisen in the early 1970s, Croce's breakthrough arrived in 1972 with his third album You Don't Mess Around with Jim, which produced three charting singles including "Time in a Bottle," which reached number one after his death on September 20, 1973. His follow-up album Life and Times contained "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," his only number-one hit during his lifetime.
