John Brendan Kelly Sr. was born in Philadelphia in 1889 and died in 1960. He won three Olympic championships in rowing. Kelly accumulated wealth through the bricklaying and construction industry and held the position of Pennsylvania secretary of revenue; he also ran for mayor of Philadelphia in 1935 but was unsuccessful.
