John Paul Stevens was born in Chicago in 1920 and worked as a lawyer and judge. He served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1975 to 2010, during which he wrote opinions on civil liberties, the death penalty, government action, and intellectual property. At his death in 2019 at age 99, he was the longest-lived Supreme Court justice in history.
