John Sherman was born in Lancaster, Ohio, in 1823 and died in 1900. He served in both houses of the U.S. Congress as a member of the Republican Party and held office as Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of State. From 1861 to 1897 he served in the U.S. Senate for nearly 32 years, holding the record for longest serving senator from Ohio. He sought the Republican presidential nomination three times, with his closest contest in 1888, but was not chosen by the party.
