John Eliot Sturges was born in Oak Park, Illinois on January 3, 1910. He worked as a film editor, producer, and director, creating films including Bad Day at Black Rock, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, and Ice Station Zebra. The Library of Congress selected The Magnificent Seven and Bad Day at Black Rock for preservation in the National Film Registry. Sturges died on August 18, 1992.
