John Warner was born in Washington, D.C., in 1927 and died in 2021. He worked as a military officer, lawyer, jurist, farmer, and politician. Warner served as U.S. secretary of the Navy from 1972 to 1974, then represented Virginia as a United States senator from 1979 to 2009, during which time he chaired the Senate Armed Services Committee from 1999 to 2001 and again from 2003 to 2007, and chaired the Senate Rules Committee from 1995 to 1999.
